Mazda CX-5 to Be Based on Minagi Concept

If only in name, Mazda is reining its Minagi concept into the familial fold. The Japanese automaker announced Monday that the compact S.U.V., which was first shown at the Geneva auto show in March, will be named the CX-5 when it enters production in 2012, slotting below the CX-7 and CX-9 crossover vehicles.

A new design approach, called Kodo, informed the Minagi’s shape, as well as that of the Shinari sedan, a concept unveiled in 2010.

Mazda is among the very few major automakers that does not offer a hybrid powertrain. However, the CX-5 will showcase the brand’s new SkyActiv suite of nonhybrid engine, transmission and body components, which work to squeeze higher efficiency and power numbers than those achieved by some parallel-hybrid systems, Mazda claims.

The production version of the CX-5 will be introduced at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Meanwhile, the Minagi concept can be seen at the New York auto show this week.
